Our Purpose - Bringing vital help to the poorest of the poor.
For almost 34 years, Flying Doctors of America has been bringing together teams of physicians, dentists, nurses, and other health care professionals to care for people who would not receive medical care. We operate under the “Mother Teresa Principle,” which means we focus on the poorest of the poor, living in conditions that are difficult for most Americans to imagine. When they know that someone cares enough to come to them a spark of hope flares up for those who live in an otherwise hopeless situation.
With Flying Doctors, everybody wins. The medical team misses only a few days of work and goes on the trip of a lifetime. Our support volunteers come to serve as translators, team leaders, photographers and healthcare assistants. Financial sponsors, both individual and corporate, have the knowledge that their dollars are making a real difference in the world.
Our Past - Launching an effective outreach on a wing and a prayer.
Flying Doctors of America was founded by Allan Gathercoal in 1990 with $700, a wing and a prayer. Today it’s a well known and established non-profit, non-sectarian organization. In the past thirty years the organization has flown more than 400 missions and provided free medical care to over 400,000 children, women and men. Among the areas served are Mexico, South America, Central America, Caribbean, India, Africa, South East Asia (Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia), China & Mongolia.
Allan Gathercoal has pioneered churches, businesses and educational programs in California. He earned graduate degrees in both Psychology and another inTheology and has a Doctorate from Columbia Theological Seminary with a focus on religious pluralism. In 1996 he received the “Vision of Race Unity Award.”

Flying Doctors of America has been providing greatly needed medical/dental care for thirty three years. Our work has been fulfilling and challenging.. We built strong lasting relationships with those we serve throughout the world Many of our physicians, dentists, nurses and other medical volunteers have hand a life changing experience by traveling to a help the worlds' poor. Our future is full of potential. We will continue to bring hope and healing to the poorest of poor while bringing a sense of joy and accomplishment to the people who give their time and money for this worthy cause.
